Christian Helpline in Newlyn (CHIN) is a registered charity established over 25 years ago by the Anglican and Methodist churches in Newlyn, Penzance, Cornwall.
The charity is run entirely by volunteers, with a couple of hours a week of admin support, and offers services to the residents of Newlyn and the surrounding areas.
Support is offered in two main areas, firstly essential transport to hospitals and surgeries and secondly, befriending.
The transport to and from hospital and other medical appointments is the largest part of our work. We have a team of volunteers who make themselves available for a day a week or fortnight to drive older or vulnerable people to their appointments. The passengers pay the volunteer driver an agreed mileage rate to cover the expenses. No money is paid to CHIN.
The befriending service for those with personal needs or anxieties is carried out subject to the availability of suitable volunteers and as such is a less sigificant part of our work.
